I have sold BMWs and Audis at different times.
If you think BMWs don't have problems, then think again. Audi has a bad rap because Audi owners are extremely well educated, well researched and very demanding of their cars. Hence a minor glitch becomes a reason for complaint. BMW owners in general (not to paint with a broad brush) are clueless, having bought the nameplate blindly. The same is reflected in surveys. BMW owners in general are afraid to speak negatively about their "prize" because it is a status symbol and they don't want to appear disloyal. On the other hand, Audi owners have no qualms about displaying their dissatisfaction.
Did you know that almost every first edition Bangle-esque 7 series was replaced in the first year of ownership with a brand new 7 series at no cost to the owner? Of course you didn't because BMW did such an effective job at suppressing that information.
All cars have problems. Otherwise why would Lexus (the epitome of reliability) have a full service garage at the dealership?
Audi is not trouble free, but it is a superior built, nicer appointed, understated marquee that is always a pleasure to drive. It is also the choice of intellectuals. :)

I would say bmw engineering is better than audi, but audi is not bad at all. The audi a4 and a6 and above have reliability issues because they are high performance engines. Any high performance engine is an experimental engine, for all car companies. This means they are very efficient, high performance engines, but not necessarily the greatest daily drivers...such as driving a formula 1 car every day to work. I don't know if audi is necessarily good with diesel, as that is not what they do best. Bmw has lots of experience working with both standard/premium gas and diesel. I would suggest the bmw, as their engineering is exceptional. The bmw 3 series is going to run small with good horsepower, with the 5 and the 7 series being larger full size cars. Although note, with bmw or audi premium level cars, expect $100-$200 oil changes.

The Audi only has a 115bhp engine whereas the BMW has a 150bhp engine, so I'd go BMW even though I'm a huge Audi fan.
They both give out 49mpg, so its all down to the drive, and the BMW's power is always going to win.
If you could get an A4 with the 2 litre TDi engine, then I'd have no hesitation in recommending it over the BMW - even in its 140bhp state of tune.
In my opinion the Audi is a classier car with much less of an image problem.

We own an 05 Audi Avant TDI sport which continues to impress. Great to drive, looks good and is economical. Went to see the new BMW 320D SE and was unimpressed with its looks. It certainly handles well and is a good competitor for the Audi on the road. I just feel the Audi's interior and exterior is more distinctive and impressive. On the road there is little to choose between them. We are considering the purchase of the newer A4 Avant. Little to separate the marques in depreciation.

A BMW is a good car that allows people who cannot think for themselves to buy with confidence , however each model is so similar to the last that you might find after spending your hard earned cash on one , that the spotty faced 17 year old youth who has never had a job and lives down the road has one remarkably similar bought for £50 from his drug dealer .
Whereas Audi change with the times and no one seeing you drive a new Audi will be in any doubt that it is a new car from a company that continue to improve their vehicles despite already being miles ahead of the competition .
BMW has already ruined its own reputation by building cars so well and so long lasting that anybody can own one .
Audi have avoided this by altering the looks of each new model .

Definately the Audi, I have had a few Audi's and they have never let me down! Before I bought my A3 Sportback S Line 2.0 TDI I test drove a BMW, and what a bag of nails on comparison. Not to mention the nasty image BMW drivers have.
Audi holds the value better too, and they are not so common.
Tell your wife I said the Audi, and i'm ALWAYS right!

I have had loads of cars over the years. The first BMW was a 323I, then i had an Audi 90, it converted me, for the first time in my life a car excited me. Since then I have had several Audi's and they have all lived up to my expectations. At present my wife has a BMW X5 and I still drive an Audi, its a better car.

An audi A4 is a very nice feminine car, i plan to buy my wife to be one when its all set and done, cause first of all its a 4 cylinder dont have 2 go hybrid(ugly cars), compare to a bmw they have almost the same feature(both luxurious). audi has the price advantage, and the new audi is way better than the one's before, its like people always keep their bad reliability history against them, trust me they good now. Go get wifey an A4 and you go scoupe an A8.. yup
