sucks. It's not particularly dangerous, but it's boring as hell, and very uncomfortable. There's no place to sit but those little miserable stainless steel stools around a stainless steel table and no place to sleep but a metal bed with a one inch thick, rock hard sawdust and fuzz filled mattress. If it's like the ones I've been in, anyway. Hell they don't even give you a pillow. So take lots more socks and underwear than you actually need, bundle in a sheet and use that for a pillow.

But I've never been in the women's side, but it didn't look any different when I looked through the window on the way to get preached to death or something. The food is horrible and the company is, well, usually not the best. You always meet a few nice folks, but you'll meet some real jerks as well. Kinda keep to yourself and let the good ones come to you.

Try to take some good books and don't watch the clock. That just makes it seem to take longer. And sleep as much as you can force yourself to.

I can only speak for the ones I've been in, in the southern U.S. The quality of the accomodations may vary from state to state. But they want it to be miserable. It's punishment, plain and simple, not rehabilitation.

My daughter served 9 months in a county jail for a probation violation. Very depressing and long. Hope you like to read to help pass the time. They often did not get out of their cell block for the once a week exercise. It was HOT summer and they didn't have air-conditioning in the cell area. Were allowed to wear only orange uniforms, no shorts except at bed time. Were not allowed to lay on the beds until a certain time. Sit only on the hard metal seats. Must have money on account to buy anything! Total loss of privacy of course. Everyone on the cell block can hear everything that you do in the bathroom. Of course, different jails will have different rules. Only could have white underwear, bra's & socks as all laundry is washed together. Not to mention the delicious food.

Get used to eating Burger King quality food and taking showers with a bunch of smelly dykes. You had also better start a fight the first day that you're there to establish you're dominance. Otherwise you are either going to get beat up alot or you are going to be someone's girlfriend. Also, look for disgarded silverware that you can hide on yourself. You'll need it to form a "shank" . It's slang for a homemade weapon. You'll have to grind it down into a sharp edge, so that when it's "lights out" and you are about to be raped by the gorrilla that is your cell mate...you can stab her/him in the leg(remember, under the waist is not classified as attempted murder) make sure you twist it once you stab them for maximum effect..
You will also want to join whatever gang is there. Dykes, Neo-Nazi chicks...whater. You'll need these people as protection, because once you are in the yard...all bets are off. You could be attacked in a number of different ways. In order to join a gang, you may have to pass a test of some sort. Most likely, you'll have to fight some one, or get beat up...but probably it will be some sort of sexual act. Just remember, that you are doing what you doing to save your life. When you are down on your knees or on your back, just go to a "safe place" It will be over soon enough. If you are in a Women's only facility, you may also have to watch yourself around the male guards. These guys are on the lookout for good looking girls that pose no threat. Since you are in there for a non-violen crime, you will be popular. If you have no scars, tattoos, or no missing teth, you can also count on a a group of guards watch you take a shower every day. It may work to your advantage to "be with" one of the guards, but be warned...these people are no different that anyone on the outside. Female inmates may be jealous of you as well as some of the other guards may see you as a threat.
All in all, you are going to have to swallow your pride, and will have to do many awful things that you probably never thought you'd have to go through. Best of luck, and let's hope that your sentence is short or can be defered.

It's *** on a plate....I served 3 days for dwi 2nd offense....It's just the humiliation of going to jail, not the danger or anything. I was in a cell at the end, so I couldn't see anything,,,,I wasn't allowed out so I slept for 3 days....It was just so awful, because I felt so, like I said,,,,,humiliated!!!

It is very depressing. You can't wear your own clothes and shoes. You have very little to do and you may be with women that are violent.
