i just installed a new hard drive into myy computer. I contacted the hard drive company, and verified that the hard drive is installed correctly. I have brand new recovery cd's for my computer, so I run the full recovery, when it finishes, I reboot the computer and I eventually get a blank screen. Without having to puchase the retail version of xp, what do I need to do?

Recovery cd's only work to recover the hard drive that they were originally made from. Basically many manufacturers became cheap and so instead of giving you full win xp cd's with your system they instead built partition's into the hard drive from which you could burn your own cd's. These cd's reference and require that partition in order to restore your system. If you bought a new hard drive... then there is nothing to recover. The partition from the computer manufacturer is obviously not on this hard drive, rendering these disks quite useless. Unfortunately you will have to purchase a new windows xp cd. Or if you're lucky you might be able to explain the situation to the manufacturer of your computer and get a recovery set sent by them (that doesn't require that partition)... but this is highly unlikely. The partition serves to verify that people aren't just arbitrarily giving away copies of their OS for free by validating that the CD actually does belong to the system you're attempting to recover.

Your boot drive may be set improperly. Power on the computer, but hit the F2 button repeatedly until the boot screen comes up.

If you do not know what you are doing in this screen, you can seriously damage your computer. I would suggest getting some help.

This is where you can reset the boot drive so it boots the OS.

Again, you can really do something bad here, so be careful.

It sounds like you have a bad recovery cd.
If the computer is still under warranty, go to the manufacturer and see if you can get another recovery disk.
