Has anyone been to Sardinia on holiday?

Thinking of going for a week in July, but heard it is quite expensive, would you recommend it?

It can be expensive - Costa Smerelda is the most expensive part, but has the best beaches.

I very much liked the area around Alghero. Alghero itself is a delightful city with great shopping (especially jewellry!) and cafe's. We stayed outside of Alghero at a beach hotel called "Hotel dei Pini". It was very good but the restaurant was awful. We had a hire car so found a couple of excellent restaurants nearby. We especially liked one that specialised in seafood and game (yes, both!) called "Da Bruno".

Sardignia is small enough you can pretty much drive from coast to coast in a day. There is a famous grotto near Alghero which is a stunning but precipitous drive; there are lots of lovely little coves and grottos all over.

Try to see if you can find some kind of renovated guest house in the country to stay. That's what we do when we go to Sicily.

I went to Alghero and it was just fantastic. Really beautiful. Instead of staying in a hotel, it will save you money to get a self-catered tourist apartment, and there are several to choose from. Check out tripadvisor.com to see which one is best for you.

One thing I would seriously recommend is renting a car while you are there, and drive out to La Pelosa national Park - its just gorgeous. There are lots of ancient ruins nearby too that you can check out, and Neptune's Grotto at Capo Caccia.

however the person booking it hasn't been gasping with horror at the price of everything, so I figured it's ok.

Plus you can swim with dolphins, how cool. :)

Beautiful island! Not as expensive as some French islands!
