Sounds like your fan belt. Does it squeal a bit (maybe even quite a bit!)? Take it to the garage and get them to check if you are not sure, its not a dangerous thing as such, until the fan belt snaps and then you might not get the car moving. Its not a really expensive job, you just don't want to do it yourself as you have to keep all the cogs in the right place, if you don't, it can cause problems.

Your not meant to start the car in gear, you should start in neutral then go up in gears!

Maybe that's why it squeaks now

The belts dry out and stick/unstick from the pulleys which makes the squeak. Dab slightly drop of brake fluid - it does not attack rubber - on the belt. that would desire to treatment it! Roy

Hi

This sounds very much like a drive belt problem. Spray the inner surface of the belt with WD40 whilst the engine is running and if it stops sqealing then renew the belt.

Cheers

I had the same problem on my old car (Peugeot 106). If I remember rightly, putting my foot on the clutch stopped the noise? It turned out to be the clutch release bearing and I was advised to get it changed. I didn’t get it changed and ended up needing a new clutch and gearbox when it finally failed. Maybe it’s worth getting the garage to check it.

Don't listen to these guys and never spray oil on your belts!
If it doesn't squeal when your steering is on full lock its the drive belt on your alternator!
It would take a mechanic about two minits to tighten it up!
and if you leave it for too long your battery will go flat if you do many short runs on a night!

If when you rev the car the noise stops, its probably the `FAN` belt. Assuming this is the case you need to tighten it.

Sounds like it might be the drive belt. Get it checked as soon as you can, cause if it goes while you're on the road you'll need towing away.

Maybe there is a mouse in the gearbox, That lives in the first gear section.
