10 years ago we had an electric car made by GM that would go at least 60 miles on a single charge. GM then recalled the leases and CRUSHED the cars. Where's my ELECTRIC CAR?

Take heart - look at what has been developed with NO HELP from our government, or from the major automakers:

The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)

This is a real car - it is not just a concept. Orders have been taken, and cars are being built. So why don't we hear about this car from our press, our government, or the auto companies?

One of the other posters here is right - electricity is CHEAP. I drive an old EV (built in 1981.) My EV drives around for about a penny per mile. But, you say, doesn't that energy come from dirty coal?
*
Doesn't matter. Here's why:
*
First of all, not all electricity comes from polluting sources. Secondly, large plants burn fuel more efficiently than individual cars do (up to 85% efficient, compared to your 25% efficient gas engine.) And energy delivery via the electrical grid is 95% efficient, which beats the wasted energy of trucking gas to thousands of service stations. And finally, EVs have motors which are far more efficient than gas engines. Greater efficiency means less energy, and less pollution per mile driven, regardless of what fuel gets burned.
*
MUCH less pollution per mile. It's easy to prove the efficiency argument, too. Just look at fuel prices. This is why it's so much cheaper to drive on electricity, compared to gasoline.

The EV-1 is gone, and it's unlikely that GM will produce the Volt concept or any other such battery-powered car considering the gigantic investment GM has in fuel-cell technology which is at least 5 years from production and probably 15 years to afforability.

Most hybrids and battery-powered cars are even more environmentally destructive in the cradle-to-grave life of a vehicle, and only shift the point of pollution, not eliminate it.

For now, fuel cells are the best answer to a cleaner and more efficient method of transportation, but until that is feasible, a greater environmental improvement can be made in changes to housing (50% of US energy consumption), recycling, and high-efficiency gas and diesel vehicles.

The best battery-powered vehicle currently on the market is the Tesla, which is planning to expand it's line to include a sedan:

Electric cars are out there and are currently available. Here are a couple of sources...

...and GM hasn't given up on the electric car just yet.. http://www.chevrolet.com/electriccar/

for all the crying.. those cars cost a lot and could not make GM any money..the greenees can talk how great they were but the people who had them got cheap lease and free repairs..its not real life. another thing was if the charge ran out you called a tow truck...and the cheap electricty it runs on comes from dirty coal..
