run antivirus software daily, get a spyware scanner and run it daily
i usually set mine to run around 3 am because when they run it slow down the pc and i am never on that late so that the best time to run it.
spybot seek and destroy is a good spyware scanner, i am kind of lost with the best virus protection right now, because i upgraded to vista and very few are compatiable with vista i tried norton but it sucked, so right now i am just using windows live one care
also you may want to check microsoft site for windows defender it seem to work pretty good

If you are using Windows, it can also be a good idea to use windows defender for spyware. It has the potential to be effective where other programs might not be effective.
