"big crybaby?"
How about "hysterical?"
(I've been reading his letters to his girlfriends. Ye gods! Dry up, Eddy!)

Don't get me wrong - he is one of my favorite writers (would I be doing all this extra research if he wasnt'?)
He also just seems to have been a guy that was constantly writing the most melodramatic, near suicidal love letters to assorted women (sometimes several at once) ...

Yes. He was a genius and all geniuses are off in some way or another. Plus he was quite disturbed -- lucky for us -- or he wouldn't have been able to write such great macabre.

He had a rough life. His father abandoned the family when the was very young, and his mother died soon after. He also had a younger sister to look after.

This was the Romantic period, and people were more sensitive and open. It was common to die young, so I think people lived more openly. Also, without television, movies and other mass media to shape our definition of "real men", this type of man was more acceptible. I would think, to women, preferable than the caveman type who beat his woman, etc.

It would be unfair, IMO, to judge him by today's standards.

Yes it would be very unfair. He suffered greatly in his life. Poverty illness and his ability as a writer was ridiculed. Before you criticize a great poet and writer, walk a mile in his shoes. I doubt that anyone today would survive.
