$250 to $500 for a good system, can be a little higher like $750 for a really good one that alerts you by cellphone or keychain.

Decent alarms can be got quite cheaply these days and are available most anywhere. However I would recommend to you to go to a specialist, as places like Halfords etc only want whats in your purse and are not really up on customer service.
Try the yellow pages under car electrical or car alarms.

Car alarms are by and large a waste of money because no-one ever pays any attention to them, which is why a lot of insurance companies don't offer discounts if you have one fitted. A car alarm is more likely to give you peace of mind. If you want to protect your car then keep valuables out of sight.

I paid £250 for a Avital CAT 1 alarm & immobilser and they came out and fitted it for me.

This alarm made my insurance alot cheaper ! And i have peace of mind that my car aint gonna be stolen :)

You can now get ones with remote start so you can actually start your car up via the key fob (the car will still be secured / alarmed) so you can get your car nice and warm ready for when you get in.

:)

Nothing, walk up to your car and say "BOO!!". Seriously, a decent car alarm is around £150 upwards and you get what you pay for. All the cheaper ones do is annoy the neighbours. Might do better to look at a top of the range steering lock. There's the visible deterent with steering locks too.

Show it a picture of Tony Blair!
Seriously, about £200 should get a Thatcham approved unit fitted, which will often reduce your insurance & will actually work properly, rather than going off every time a bird sh*ts on the roof, which is what my neighbour's does. AAAAARGH!
