One way is to use a drive imaging program such as Acronis or free ones available from some sites. Make a image of the desktop's drive to a DVD or CD (some progs will allow to to it by a network cable to the new PC) and then restore it to the laptop. Make sure that the laptop has the same number of drives mapped as the desktop otherwise the programs will look for these drives and fail. You will then also find that certain drivers will need updating as the laptop will have different hardware. Delete the old drivers and then just reinstall the correct ones from your laptop's CD. Iassure you it can be done as I have done it many times. You will, of course, replace the laptop completely with the other setup.

set up a network between the two. xp has a wizard that sets it up fairly easy. you wont even need a hub. just a network cable.think the plugs have to be reverse configured, ask at store so they give wright cable. or else use usb drive. they are fairly cheap now.if network dosnt let traffic through its because of virus scanner. i disable my virus scanner when i hook up to my other computer then enable it afterwards instead of setting upvirus scanner to allow traffic through that port. that way hackers cant find that vulnerability to use.if havnt got the original setup disks of programs. it will be a pain, will have to try and locate all the programs dll files ect, located at places like system32, or windows root folder ect. maybe try copying program and when says cant find such and such .dll then do search on computer for that file then copy it to the same directory on the other. this is a rough method and may not always work. some programs are written into win.ini and sometimes sys.ini.
sometimes windows startup. this was 98s system maybe different for xp.

Any of your above answers that say you can just copy programs using various media (Cd DVD memory stick Network etc.)
are misleading you.
You can not copy programs across to a new computer of any type. They will not work and/or will not be properly installed.

The only items you can copy in that way are documents, photos, music files, movies etc. (things that you have created or downloaded)

I think it's better to install the program rather than copying it to a new lap-top. Some files will be missing if you copy that program to a new lap top.

Use a program called PC Mover. The program will come with a special USB cable and software.

There are many ways

1) Write to the CD/DVD drive then copy
2) Write to a Pen/USB drive then copy
3)Copy files from one to another using networking wire
4)Upload your files on the internet and then download from there

Hope this helps

There is no way other then a reinstall or using a purchased product.

The reason is that all programs have to have their dll registered and there is no other way to do this.
