Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic organisms, i.e. they lack nuclei. Most of the genetic material is located in the cytoplasm as a single DNA molecule, which is attached to the membrane. There are also smaller molecules, called plasmids, situated again in the cytoplasm. All eukaryotic cells have membrane bound nuclei.
