If you mean the general flow of energy, it is because it follows the universal law that energy flows from a region of higher to lower energy.
If you mean the food chain, its because,some energy is used up in each tropic level before the energy from sunlight is passed on to the next tropic level.

Because of evolution and the development of one species from other the basic energy flow has to be the same.
