I am trying to find out if a car dealership can have a key made for a car if you supply them with the vin #.

yes they can make one off of the vin #, but you must first prove that you own the car, or have a valid repossesors order for it. I reposses from time to time so i get keys made all the time. problem with this is that if the vehicle has a passive anti-theft system and the key has a chip in it, it will not start the car unless it is programmed. this must be done at a dealership. I know for sure that fords with the internall micro chip dont work with out first being programmed. if you do get one, ask them to see if it must be programmed to save yourself some headaches.

No they have to see that oyu own the car. So if you just have the vin number you cant steal it. I can give the manufacturer anyones vin number. You must have proof you own the car. So you need to have a key for them to copy.

I just had a key made for my '97 Monte Carlo last week. I had to bring the title, registration, proof of insurance, the vin number and my driver's license before they would cut me a new key. You have to prove that the vehicle is yours.

Yes they can make a key from your vin# but you need to make sure you have the title for proof of ownership

Yes but I don't remember what questions they ask you to make sure you own the car. I did this way back in 1993.
