bit torrent is a system of file sharing. It involves 2 files and a series of Torrent managers (programs) --- on each machine involved.

Here's how it works:

If you want to download a TV file using the bit torrent system the first thing you'll need is a Torrent Manager. Azureus is a good one. It is very similar to an FTP client, except you don't configure it to go to a certain site to pull down your file.

So how does it know where to go to get your anime? It knows this from the torrent file. If you run a google search for "Naruto Torrent", Google will take you to a series of search engines links that you can hit and then query them for "Naruto Torrent". (I am listing this out for others; I apologize if you have already completed the torrent acquisition step.) Once you get those results you can open the file from the site and you Torrent Manager software will use it to find the computer that are hosting the exact copy of that TV show.

Now for the second file I mentioned: That is the actual TV show (or whatever media) file that the Torrent looks for. The torrent file helps your torrent manager locate the computers that have a copy of the media the Torrent file describes. Then the client takes bits of the media from all of the hosts it finds. That prevents anyone from having their connection bogged down too heinously by file sharing, gives top download speeds, and means that at most each individual is only giving you part of a media file.

Bit Torrent does not allow you download things directly because it's a p2p sharing program (peer to peer). However, you will still get the download but just slower since you're sharing data among other people. Here's a guide to Bit Torrent: http://wiki.theppn.org/index.php/BitTorrent_Tutorial .
