Previous post is COMPLETELY incorrect. GM didn't put any kind of maintenance reminder light except the Change Oil Soon light on Grand Ams.

Your computer is telling you something is off, most likely one of the many sensors.
The other poster telling you to tighten your gas cap has good advice. This is step 1.

After that, if the light doesn't go away, take it to any shop and they can find out what the problem is. Could be any one of dozens of things.

I hope your ABS light is not on as well? If BOTH are on, one of your ABS sensors has gone bad, and they are built into the wheel bearing assembly. The entire thing will have to be replaced.

If you'll take your car to Autozone and tell them about it, they will have some one come out and take a reading on the car for free. That will tell them what it is inside your engine that triggered you "service vehicle soon" light to come on. Don't wait too long, because you never know the extent of the problem.

Presuming it's a 2000-something model (you didn't give the year), it's an "idiot light" that's telling you to have your oil changed or to get a tune-up or to perform some sort of regular maintenance. The computer is programmed to observe maintenance intervals and then tell you to have the car serviced. A bit of a gimmick on GM's part, but it is a good idea to have it taken in, if only to get the light to go off!

It's a default light that tells you that you need to get the code read to figure out what is going on. Take it to any AutoZone during the day and they will find out what the code is and give you the meaning of it for free. They don't do it after dark though.

It means to bring it to a dealership so they can connect it to their computer systems. There they can tell you exactly what it needs based on a computer readout.
