The Romans distinguished three types of kiss.
Osculum ,which was a friendship kiss on the cheek.
Basium, which was a kiss of affection on the lips.
Suavium, which was a lovers' deep kiss.
Kissing has also been mentioned in the Bible.Remember Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss.
Also in Greek mythology at the Diocleia festival at Megara in honour of Diocles, lover of Philolaus,a kissing contest was held in which boys would kiss a male judge who awarded a laurel wreath to the boy he deemed to be the best kisser.

Hello,

(ANS) My guess is that it goes WAY WAY back into our ancient evolutionary past, back to our tree dwelling ape like ancestors.

Why? because bonobo's (chimps) use kissing as part of there social bonding process. And given that chimps have been around for thousands of years before the appearance of civilsed humans, and given that we share 98.9% of the precise same DNA as them I think we can say this is probably where kissing orgininated.

I don't know about kissing generally, but French Kissing started in France a couple of centuries ago. There was a HUGE outbreak of syphillis and making out was used as a safer form of penetration between lovers.

I read that kissing developed from spitting chewed food into the mouths of infants being weaned! It was something you did with a child you loved so it became natural to touch mouths with anyone you loved!

Dogs regurgitate into their pups mouths too, that's why dogs lick your face. They are mimicking being a puppy to get some food!
