Absolutely not! If the letter is addressed to J Smith but was sent to P Gray and P Gray opened it, then depending on the country, that would be against the law. That is a HUGE invasion of privacy! I would never open a letter that was not addressed to me! If this happened to you, then please do not let it go. Follow it through, because this is just so wrong! Can you give us some more info??

No-one else has the right to open mail addressed to you. Doesn't matter if it was sent to the wrong address, if it had your name on it then only you have the right to open it.
Of course, if your name is something really common and there was someone at the other address with the same name then it gets complicated...

if a letter is addressed to you and it clearly states ;
to be opened by the named person on the letter
ONLY...
then that person will be breaking the law if he/she opens it regardless of it being sent to them accidental
HOWEVER if there is no such message on the addressee envelope and the mail is delivered to the wrong address then that person can open the mail because once the mail has been put through the door it solely becomes property of any one in that house!
all mail until delivered even mail that has your name on it officially belongs to HRH the Queen
until it has been put through a letter box!!

No. Opening mail that isn't addressed to you is a federal offence (HIGHLY illegal). They have to put "Return to Sender" or "not known at this address" on the envelope and put it in the post box at the post office.

No they do not have the right to open it as it is no their name it should be put back in postbocx with not at this address on.
It is illegal to open someone elses mail without their permision or in case of my daughter I am her appointee.
Doubt weither you would get away with a successful prosecution without putting your hand in your pocket either.

if the letter was addressed to you then you are the addressee. If the person it was sent to opened it then that is illegal.

No, its illegal. They should right on the front "person no known at this address", and then put back in the post again.
