I think they are terrible, pretty much, all around. It is teaching the children to be superficial, for one thing. And, I was in a few pageants, as I was growing up....when I didn't win, I was crushed! I took it as being told I wasn't good enough.

Kids only have a certain amount of a capacity to understand such things. I think submitting them to something so judgmental is almost abusive. They just don't have the coping skills, if they aren't matured enough.

Plus, in more than one way....it's sending out the wrong messages to the child. And, you are correct.....makeup has no business being on a child. Unless, they are in their own bedroom with little Sally May playin' dress up and wearin' Mommy's heels.

lolol

Really depends on the pageant. There was a charity that had pageants and gave the proceeds to St. Jude's Cancer Research. The children were not allowed to use all the makeup and stuff, they just played dress up and had their pic taken. The winner got a ribbon and crown...just fun for a good cause. The fancy pageants (a la Little Miss Sunshine) remind me of a dog show..kinda creepy and definitely not a good way to build healthy self image!

Most Americans feel these beauty pageants for children are not the best of things for kids to be doing. High emphasis on looks not actions, the make up, the sexy dances and adult themed songs they sing make most parents say NO WAY!!

I think it has gotten out of control. I also believe that parents are setting their child up for disappointment when they do this because there can be only one winner. I feel that every child should be treated like a winner and told that they are beautiful and special.

I think they are sick. And I think it is more for strange mothers who are living through their daughters than for the kids. And it is really disgusting to see a little girl tramped out like Paris Hilton. Yuck.

I think it's ridiculous for kids to start that young in pageants.

they are totally sad, and usually it's the mom trying to live vicariously through her child....
