I thought it was my imagination, but I've asked a few people and they all agree it's true. Is there some physiological factor that may account for it?

Its expected. Bet you the same is true for American women too. Way over exposed to the Tinklebell Syndrom. Child like voices and noises are considered seusual in Hollywood, but it's not the same for the C&W crowd, for them smoke and whiskey is where its at, when it's on a womans voice.

Accent and tone are generally similar between ethnic groups - the desire and need to "fit-in" is so great, they all end up believing that they are different, when in fact they are conforming with a stereotype.

e.g. Just look at the stereotypical Goths (all wear black, like the same things, believe that they are rebelling against something, when all they are is: another Goth (a flock of black sheep)

American English is articulated largely in the mouth and head, as opposed to the throat, thus giving both men and women "higher" sounding voices. Also, there are cultural variables to consider...

Americans in general have alot of feeling.Their country being a super power both economically and militarily makes them very bossy.They think they are feared everywhere hence their high voices which they think intmidates everybody on earth.They want their presence to be recognized wherever they are.

It's common in American men too. Caused by the way they articulate and by their conforming to cultural norms.

This is especially noticeable in young American girls..when they cry 'mommy,mommy.' I find it very annoying,they seem to talk through their noses too.

Yes, I have also noticed this, they always seem to be screaming, especially when excited about something, strange, bigger mouths maybe.
