I have a 5 year old packard bell computer with windows ME. It is blocked and refuses to respond to anything!! I have pressed F8 and F10 and F12 but nothing happens. It has been suggested that I reboot using the recovery disc but I am afraid of losing all my documents. Will I loose My documents and folders and soft ware I have inserted if I reboot?

you can boot from the windows installation cd and then run a repair install. It will keep all documents and programs intact

I'm afraid that every one of the responses that you've so far received is wrong! The all seem to be assuming that you have a Windows CD. Many computers sold here (UK) will either have a Windows CD or Recovery CD(s). They don't normally come with both.

If you use a recovery disc, it will reformat your hard drive and install Windows, any other programs that were installed when you first bought your computer, and sometimes the drivers for the hardware of your computer ... though this might be on another CD. This will delete any files/documents/data that you've put on there since you had your computer.

As one of the replies comments Windows recovery should leave your data intact. However there is no guarantee. The first rule of computers is Backup. You can buy a 500 Gig USB Hard Drive For £100 and smaller ones much cheaper. If you do save your data you should copy all your important documents MP3's etc on to another drive. Quite often a hard drive will die with no warning. There are companies who can recover your data for you but they are a damn sight dearer than a back up drive. Good Luck.

Also, consider updating your operating system. Try UBUNTU or XUBUNTU they are free and reliable. Plus you gain access to thousands of free programs provided by the OpenSource community. Do a dual boot with your ME.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.
