First and foremost, the home has to be CLEAN. Eat your meals only at the kitchen table, not all over the house. Never leave anything wet, like dishes in the sink,or water on the bathroom floor. Then, buy some combat. Place it all over the home as directed on the box. It really, really works if it is used correctly. Replace them after 3 months. By the 3rd month, you won't see any roaches--- you might see a lot of dead ones, but that's a good thing!
Don't stop putting them down every 3 months even if you've not seen any. They could be coming from the neighbors house. One of the great things about Combat is it is a silent and odorless killer. And it keeps on killing because the bugs take it back to the nests and the other bugs eat it too and they die. Sprays and "bombs" only kill the bugs that it comes in contact with, and they smell horrible.
Personally, I can NOT stand to have cockroaches and I go out of my way to make sure my home is free of them. They are disgusting and carry germs. ugh!
Good luck!

We live in Florida, where cockroaches never die.
For a number of years we have used electronic (plug in) pest controllers. They have been very successful.
We do not use sprays inside at all. The Electronic Pest controllers are sold in the pest chemical section at Home Depot and Lowe's.
They plug in and send an electric vibration or something like that through the electric lines in your house. It disturbs and and discourages any little critters. We have none.
I bought them on clearance years ago and used them, the first ones had night lights. When the night lights burned out I thought they weren't working any more. So I got rid of them. We got bugs back. So I bought more. Again we are bug free.
They were $20.00 for 3, but we have 3500 square feet and I only have three in the entire house and they seem to do the job.
The one other thing that we do to keep control over this problem is that we have a lawn spraying company that sprays fertilizer and pest control over all of the property about 3 times a year.
So the combination of the two seem to work.
I hope this is helpful.

First things first, cockroaches feed off of food crumbs similar to ants, so always be sure to keep a clean home. Second, cockroaches are very hard to get rid of. Did you know, it is believed, cockroaches are the only thing that would survive a nuclear war? My best advice is to hire an exterminator asap!

Cockroaches are one of the hardest pests to rid of. Usually once you get them that is it. These things live through radiation for peeks sake. You have to have your house bombed by a professional where they tent your house for like a week or longer.

Buy some "bug bombs" to put in your home.. the kind that fumigate everything.. you will need to take out all of your open food (best to just destroy anything that you suspect may have roaches inside it).. and open all of your cabinets and rooms...
make sure you set off enough of these fumigators to fully engulf your home.. and make sure you leave for at least 4 hours.. then come back and open it up and air it out...
Fumigate again in 3 days.. and again in 3 days... you will need to fumigate 3 times to kill off the hatching eggs...
you will need to spray some insecticide outside your home to keep the roaches from coming inside to begin with...
if you live in an apartment.. it is even harder.. because roaches can come through the walls from a neighboring apartment... just fumigate regularly to keep them killed off...
You should make sure that roaches have as few places to live and as little to eat as possible.. they love old food, beer, even paper.. get rid of anything you don't absolutely need to have around the house that will attract them...
depending upon where you live.. they may come into your home for food or for water... or just for a place to nest...
OH! YES!! What Samm says... those electronic bug chasers work pretty good!! I have them in the house and in my storage shed out back (they keep away bugs, mice, rats, etc)

Cleanliness as stated several times.
I tried bay leaves in containers in pantry and it seemed to work. Look up in herb books.

The first step is to have absolutely no food of any kind out, ever again. Then take it from there with pesticides.
