You would have to find out the reason for the mold. Is water coming in from the outside. Do you have leaky pipes behind your walls? Is your basement floor (cement) cracked? You don't have to tear it down. You need to kill the mold with chlorine. Wipe everything and then repaint. Or you may need to replace all the wall boards that are too damaged. Try using a dehumidifier to absorb any moisture in the air. Open windows and doors on a regular basis to circulate the air. Make sure your property slopes away from the house and that all gutters are clean and flowing away from the foundation of your house. Unless there is another reason like Katrina, you should be ok.

My goodness! How much mold are we speaking of? Is this like a Katrina damaged home?

We had an excessive mold problem in our bathroom. We gutted it and replaced the walls & floor. It was much less expensive than tearing down the entire house.

Now if your problem is THAT extensive, you might want to try SOME gutting to start with and find out just how deep the mold problem goes. If the mold goes all the way through to the basic structure of the home, then you would be better off tearing it down.

lol well, it depends on how bad the mold is. You can have someone come in and try to rid of the mold and see what kind of mold it is. If it is bad mold then you would have to gut it and if the mold still doesn't go away you would have to tare it down because then it would be unliveable. Mold spores can kill. Before you have the fire dept burn it down check with your insurance company.
