Many people speak more than they write. For them spelling is not that critical. Sound plays a more important role.
Once 'spoken' the general meaning of what is being said is not affected.
We are in the age of speed and there is no time to take care. [that is another story]
Of course, once the spoken word is reduced by these 'speakers' to writing, it can be quite annoying; as then the reality hits that the words are really mispoken :)
By the way, I think that this has more to do with attitude than intellect etc.

I'm convinced that it's the method of teaching children to read these days. The spelling is atrocious, and it's not always the less intelligent that make these errors. I've heard that children are taught to read by sound and it's only later that correct spelling and variations such as you've mentioned come into play. By that time these mistakes are ingrained and we're left with a generation of people that spell like morons, regardless of their IQs.
I'm also going to put a bit of a blame on text messaging where people use abbreviations to save time.

A question like this has already been asked here - alas! nobody cares about spelling now.
The problem is that native speakers don't want to bother while foreigners might just forget which is which.
I'm a teacher of English and see such mistakes every day.

My guess is that it's the same reason that people don't know the difference between "its" and "it's" or that you do not use an 's to pluralize a word--just simple carelessness. I taught grammar and writing to high school students, and no matter how many times we go over it, I still have students who commit these "offenses."

Pure laziness and ignorance. Ignorance is such a harsh word, but it's the truth.
I hate when people use "wont" in place of "want." For example, "I wont the apple instead of the orange."
They say ignorance is bliss, but c'mon, I've yet to reach that plateau!

They went to government-run schools. You can also tell them by their firm belief that "a lot" is one word. Also, they don't see, do, think, or say, they either "go" or "was like."
