Online degrees are not highly respected in the USA. For a very important article about online learning, see the New York Times for Sunday Feb 11, 2007 - they had a very revealing article about the University of Phoenix, the largest and most widely known online school in the USA.

There are many respectable universities which teach SOME courses online, but in general you cannot COMPLETE a degree online, you can only take some of the courses. You would have to take some of the courses at the university. Harrvard and Stanford are definitely NOT online schools.

Asking for the best on-line school is kind of like asking which breed of dog's poop taste best. There is a best tasting one, but you really don't want to try it.

Most online schools are For Profit corporations that accept nearly everyone. Since they are not selective, then even if you manage to get a good education through them, there is no way to distinguish yourself from the majority of students at those schools. Employers do not take on-line degrees seriously. The New York Times recently ran an article where they mentioned that Intel will not pay for students to take online courses because they feel that they are not rigorous.

Most of these schools have regional accreditation. However, the bar for that is not set too high. They are not accredited by the more prestigious national boards. The Times article points out that they have not applied for it -- because they know that they will be turned down.

The reputations of online schools have been hurt by the recent problems at the University of Phoenix. They were fined a record $9.8MM by the Department of Education for sleazy recruiting practices. They are currently under investigation for padding their placement numbers.

The schools do not charge as much as prestigious private universities -- but they are more expensive than good public universities.

Go to a real school.
