One obvious answer is the proverbial "little black dress." Another look I consider classic is a crisp white shirt/or blouse. The ways you can wear one are limitless, and you always look sharp, if understated, which is perhaps what classic is all about, huh? A good cashmere cardigan, whether jewel necked or v-neck is a great classic piece that will endure. So pull on the 501's. add the white shirt, tie the sweater around your shoulders, add a pair of skinny black pants and some cool new flats, pull your hair into a sleak ponytail, grab your shades, and hit the door a la Audrey Hepburn. Or make the pants a great tailored slack, and go a al Kat Hepburn. Minimal make up and only a fine piece or two of jewelry. Less is more!

It depends what you need - are we talking male or female?
Female: well fitted good quality fabric shift dress with matching single breasted jacket in a flattering (for you) neutral colour; flattering dressy "little black dress" - wear with pearls or diamonds (if you have them, lucky!), well cut crisp long sleeve collared white shirt; twinsets; knee length or just under knee pencil or A line (depending on your figure) skirt; mid length or long well cut wool coat.
Accessories: plenty of scarves to dress the outfits up, gloves, plain gold or silver jewellery, a good quality (leather) handbag in a neutral colour, day heeled shoes to match, black sparkly or satin evening sandals, satin evening clutch.
Casual: I agree with the jeans - they must fit well; leather jacket, fitted polo shirts and turtleneck sweaters, casual knee length shorts or 3/4 pants in a quality fabric, leather sandals, boat shoes or cowboy boots.
Buy as well as you can afford and look after it, work your wardrobe as a "capsule", be fit, happy and healthy and look after your grooming and you will never look bad. Hope this helps!
