Name: Usher Raymond
Birth Name: Usher Raymond IV
Gender: Male
Height: 5' 11"
Nationality: American
Date of Birth: 14th October, 1978
Birth Place: Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA
Profession: Musician, Vocalist
Father: Usher Raymond III
Mother: Jonetta Patton
Brother: James
Usher was born in Dallas, Texas on 14 October 1978, and during his early formative years he was brought up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was introduced to music at a young age as his mother, Jonnetta Patton, was the choir director in their hometown church. Usher joined the church choir when he was six years old and this continued until they (his mother, his brother James and Usher) relocated to Atlanta Georgia when he was 12. The musical direction that Usher continued to take growing up was guided by his mother.
Usher took part in various talent shows during his adolescent years and it was his performance in one of the shows that caught the eye of a record executive from LaFace Records. Usher was only 14 when this happened and he was later signed by LaFace Records as a recording artist. In 1994, he went on to release his first album. The single “Think of You” introduced the music fraternity to the potential that Usher had, and he scored a minor hit. This was the initial platform with which Usher would launch his music career, and it also opened up other opportunities. In 1995, he was selected by Coca-Cola to record a national holiday jingle and he also recorded a remake of “Let’s Straighten it Out” (originally performed by Blues legend BB King) with Monica.
All this while, Usher continued to stay in school, and it was only upon his graduation from high school in 1997 that he released his 2nd album, My Way in October. This album was produced by Jermaine Dupri (So So Def Records) and of the 9 tracks found on the album, Usher wrote 5 of them and worked with artists like Babyface, Teddy Riley and Dupri on the other 4 songs. Usher was still only 19 years old, and with his first single from the album, “You Make Me Wanna”, he scored a breakthrough hit which peaked at No.2 on the pop charts.
Besides releasing solo albums, Usher also contributed to other projects. He recorded songs for the LaFace Family Christmas album and he also contributed a track for the soundtrack for the movie Kazaam which starred Shaquille O’Neal and another for the Soul Food soundtrack. Usher also tried his hand at acting, he had a role in the daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful and he also had a supporting role in the teen movie The Faculty.
It took another 4 years before Usher released his 3rd album, 8701 in 2001. The album name signifies its date of release, 7th August 2001. His biggest hits from this album were “U Remind Me” and “U Don’t Have to Call”.
Usher’s 4th and most recent album, Confessions, was released in March 2004. This album is proving to be Usher’s most successful commercial release yet. In the first week alone it sold 1.1 million copies in the US, breaking all previous sales records for a male R&B recording artist. The strength of its release can be partly attributed to the huge success enjoyed by the early release of the single “Yeah!” which Usher collaborated on with Ludacris and Lil Jon.
