Why do people here shout "Grow up" to people - who's points of view they disagree with?

Isn't this actually one of the most childish phrases on the planet (last heard -when I was a kid in the eigthies by spoilt fairly ugly ickle girlies in the classroom) - who have never - to this day actually "grown up" - or if they have, offer no way of life anyone here would wish to "Grow Up" too?

Particularly annoying - when it is followed or preceeded by no arguements, logic or reason - and is just used for the "debater" to just make some kind of irrellevant pointless stupid noise?

Is "grow up" the only arguement left for the Iraq war and the right?

Is this phrase actually supposed to convince people to take up a religion, fight and die for they're county - vote conservative or marry ugly chicks or work for 3dollars a hour?

(as a chap who spent years in the substance misuse industry - a fairly adult and professional area - I still have no idea what the hell it means).

You're right, it's a stupid phrase and a very poor argument. It's like someone swearing because the can't think of anything else to say.
I'm often referred to as a big kid, and I hope to remain in touch with my inner child until the day I die. When anybody ever says this to me I always reply with "Why? I might turn out like you." and then some times add "y'bastard!" on the end if I feel particularly strongly about it. I'll ask them what is so good about "growing up", when I am quite clearly already a fully grown man! I can be as mature, sensible and responsible as anybody else when the time is right, but where is the fun in that?
It does seem to be the most useless, brainwashed sheep (who do exactly what the system wants them to) who use this phrase, this may be because the don't know any way of living other than that which is fed to them in their system conditioned, little box. They tend to use it when they are confronted by something that to them is way out of the 'ordinary', like (shock horror!) somebody expressing their own opinion, and not one they just lifted out of a tabloid newspaper.
Personally, I would never tell anyone to grow up, it should discouraged. Anybody telling me to do so, makes me sick.

Look up the idiotic and inane questions asked by some questioners, i.e 'George The Fat Pink Hippo'.

The frustration that people feel at people on here, they can't use, perhaps, the slightly more offensive insults they use in real life, so they use 'minor' phrases like 'grow up', meaning stop acting like a stupid, immature, idiotic child and act like a grown adult!

I would never use this phrase because, being 30 years of age, I haven't grown up either so it would be very hypocritical of me to shout this out. I think it is used to show the other person you don't agree with that they are of lesser maturity than you are.

I agree with you mate.

If people want mature they should buy old cheese.

If they'd care to help educate or enlighten an aid anothers growth to their obviously "wiser" stature maybe they could elaborate or at least say something more informative than grow up.

Its something used to belittle the opposition. To make them feel small, inexperienced and thus "wrong." And yes, usually it is immature.

"Grow up" are words that mean grow forward, live respectively, reach for positive goals etc...in fact, are positive words. Yes, two words could be lacking in subject however should not be manipulated to be abusive when adivice to grow up is limited to positive advice. The opposite advice would be ...screw up or mess up or how's this one - don't grow up.
