It also appears as Drive Cleaner and acts in the way that it takes me to a website where I am offered spyware software. It is not possible to remove the safetytoolbar by unticking in the View menu or by uninstalling it. If anyone else has experienced this, please advise on how to get rid of it?
Grateful for any help given

Try to get a Full Copy of a program called Ad-Aware SE as that will surely get rid of any and all Spyware that you might have installed in place on your Hard Drive!!!

Failing that try going into your regedit file which you can find if you look in your Hard Drive which is usually under C:/ in the My Computer section... Windows and then you can choose to remove a few things etc...

**CAUTION!!! ONLY USE THE REGEDIT FILE SYSTEM IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!!!**

apart from that I'd suggest looking for some sort of Ad-Aware / Spyware remover... Ad-Aware SE is by far the best though!!! ^-^

Good Luck!!!

install avg. www.grisoft.com and an alternate method- this is a little bit risky - click run in the start menu and type regedit it opens the registry editor... what is the manufacturer of that program eg. yahoo messenger is created by yahoo... find the title by clicking F3 find that asafety toolbar stuff then delete it. WARNING: be careful or you'll damage programs...just a little bit risky but if you managed to get out of this youre good to go again

To remove, install SuperAntiSpyware and run in safe mode
http://www.superantispyware.com/?tag=GOOGLE-SUPERANTISPYWARE
-----------------------------------
I recommend installing the following 5 malware detection programs on all systems. Run at least once every month.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Enable SDHelper, do not optional tea timer. After installation: update + scan + immunize
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)
http://www.superantispyware.com/

CCleaner: Set to run when computer starts. Removes tracking cookies.
Place cookies you want to keep in the save list. Do not run “Scan for Issues” (registry cleaner)
http://www.ccleaner.com/
-------------------------------------------------------
I also recommend the following::

Malicious Software Removal Tool (run “full scan”)
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Windows Defender (Free active spyware protection)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan”
Updates windows, virus and spyware scan, disk cleanup, disk fragmentation (if needed), backs up registry and then cleans registry, and checks for open firewall ports.
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (An automatic service to help with slow log off and unreconciled profile problems)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

Rootkit revealer: (advanced) Close all programs first and then run.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/RootkitRevealer.mspx
Do nothing at this time with the results! Not all results will be malware! Google each result.
