What are the best things to do there? Where are the best places to stay? I may rent a car and go further afield rather than stay in Pula - what's nearby?

There are a lot of small towns to see down the Mediterranean coast. When former Yugoslavia fell apart into six independent countries, these places divided in a way, too. But you can travel by a car down the coast with no problems. And if you decide to stay in Croatia only, that is fine, too. Because there are some great islands for all sorts of people. I mean, whether you like to be alone or in a company. The food is delicious, with a lot of home made specialities. Good Luck!

You lucky thing I love Croatia some of my best holidays - I suggest u check out the website www.pulainfo.hr/en/ there are some events on in the middle of May
If you can get up to Porec ( they have guys who throw ice cream to each other across the street which my daughter loved) further North they have a high speed crossing to Venice - it takes less than an hour.
You are also not that far away from Slovenia which is gorgeous.

The roman coliseum is worth a visit, up the road is Opatia which is very nice, much further down the coast is Dubrovnik, or you can take a ferry to the islands, in May the water is still too cold to swim though.
