The same reason countries have always been at war, money and control of one's enemies.

The British empire tried to take over the entire world, so did the Soviet empire, the Ottoman empire and the Roman Empire. and there are still many countries with the same goal today.

It was the fact they were able to colonise Africa they did, to spread the Empire, and the wealth came from there.

Under British rule they prospered, but when they gained independence most went to hell in a hand basket so to speak. Few have escaped civil war, corruption and poverty.

Spain France Germany and Belgium all had colonies which were rich and prosperous, but they followed the same decline upon Independence.

I'll answer a question with a question. Would you want to colonize Somalia or Liberia? No they don't have anything worth taking. Resources and wealth would be the only reason to colonize anywhere, not just Africa, Central & South America, India or the far east. It wasn't just Britain, it was also Spain, France, Holland, and the list goes on.
