We own the Ps3 60 gig and yes it does play all the ps2 games as well as ps1 games. We have tested even games that were made in 2001 and before.

The machine even saves all of the games to it's hard drive if set up properly in the game save area. .

How do I make a PS2 Save Game on the Harddrive?

Simply go to Memory Card Utility (under the Game folder), then select the icon that says "New Internal Memory Card". It will ask you whether you want a PS One or a PS2 card. And your on your Way. Just like the Question above^, you will need to assign the card to one of two slots.

you can even used your old game save off the ps1 and ps2 memory cards with a fourteen dollar adapter.

Unfortuntaley it is now estimated that only 20-30% of the PS2 games will work on the PS3 and that in the USA the consoles might not even save the game progress on the PS3 (as they dont have mem cards anymore, but an internal harddrive).
So far the PS3 seems flawed in many ways.

The American and Asian PS3 contain the original chip sets of the PS2 so in effect it has a PS2 inside and will play Ps1 and Ps2 games.
The version of the PS3 they are releasing in the UK does not have these chips inside but will run software to emulate a PS1 or 2, each old game will have to have new software written for it and your PS3 updated to play it. In short you will not be able to play all you ps1/ps2 games but only the ones that Sony has released emulation software for.
More bad news for anyone wanting a PS3, we pay more than the rest of the world and get a lower spec machine! nice.
