Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent. The English name comes from the old verb "to shrive" because people would go to confession in preparation for Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent (the forty day period of fasting ending with Easter Day).

Mardi Gras is the French equivalent of ShroveTuesday and it translates as "Fat Tuesday". This is because people were supposed to eat up all the food in their house which would be prohibited over Lent.

It is French for "Fat Tuesday" and is celebrated in many fashions around the world. It is the last Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season. Generally there is lots of revelry because Lent is supposed to be a time of fasting and penance.
