What I have been told is that cravings during pregnancy are often because your body needs something which the food you crave contains (i.e: iron, calcium etc...)

Should you give in to the cravings? I crave chocolate sometimes, and very often oranges, also egg & chips and poppery minced beef!

There is nothing I "shouldn't" eat, as I'm putting on the right amount of weight and I have low lood sugar and cholesterol.

Do you or did you give in to cravings during pregnancy? Did it do you any harm / good?

Should I? Or is it bad to just eat what you want?

Thanks :-)

I meant "peppery" minced beef, not poppery, lol, sorry!

Firstly i want to say congratulations :)

Scientificaly it's said that there is no link or anything into you needing the things that we crave during pregnancy. It's more to do with the whole thing that our senses go up and smells and tastes become more stronger in foods and stuff as our hormone levels go up and we're just wanting more of the stuff that we would never even eat before..
As long as your eating a balanced diet still and getting all the right nutrients and vitamins that you would do anyway, it doesnt matter what you eat, as long as it's not somethign that would put your baby at harm such as soft cheese and peanuts , the things we're told to avoid.
So go ahead, give into your cravings and enjoy your pregnancy :)

Im 22 weeks pregnant and haven't got many cravings lately.. About 10 weeks ago all i could eat was red onions lol! But i had to stop eating them as they were giving me bad heartburn so wasn't really good lol!

Good luck with your pregnancy and hope everything turns out perfectly for you :)

Take care xxx

The idea that cravings are you body 'telling' you what you need to eat because you are deficient in something is just not true. Our bodies do not know what the nutrient make-up of a piece of food is. We only know that a food contains iron or calcium etc because scientists have analysed them and told us what is in them.
However, that's not to say that you shouldn't allow yourself a little bit of what you fancy. That's especially the case if the food is nutritious. Try to avoid giving into chocolate craving more than once or twice a week, but minced beef, eggs and oranges are all good. Letting yourself eat some nice food that you enjoy will make you happy and therefore will do you and your baby good. Just don't let your diet go to pot completely!

I eat anything I want pretty much. I am 33 weeks pregnant and have only gained a little under 20 lbs so far. In fact my OB was worried that I wasnt gaining enough weight and told me to eat whatever I could to put on the weight. This pregnancy I have craved a different thing in each trimester. The first one I craved spaghetti, in the second in was nothing but chocolate, and now in the third...its bananas. I do eat pretty healthy overall. Yogurt, pineapples, apples, bananas, cottage cheese...etc...but if I want chips then I eat chips. I am not going to worry about it...everything done in moderation is okay. good luck to you and your little one.

Give in to it!!! If your craving it then have it the cravings will soon go away once you have eaten enough. Im only 13 weeks gone but about 3 weeks ago I couldn stand food I lived on cereals for a week - In one week i went through 1 box of cornflakes, 1 small box of weetabix, 1/2 a box of special K, 10 pints of semi skimmed milk & 6 pints of skimmed milk!!! when I finally started to crave things I enjoyed them! If the foods that you crave are safe then eat as much as you want! Good luck!!!

As long as the foods you crave aren't dangerous, go ahead and indulge - within reason. Just make sure that for the most part you're eating a balanced diet. I had a major raspberry milksake craving when I was expecting, which at least ensured I was getting plenty of all the stuff milk gives you!
Oh, and watch out for the dreaded heartburn if you eat all that - it nearly did me in!

I've found that the only way to get rid of a craving is to satisfy it, as the cravings always get stronger until I satisfy them.

Many of your cravings sound healthy - eggs, oranges, beef. These are all needs of the baby anyway, so go ahead. As for the chocolate and chips, I've given in to those cravings too!

As long as you are craving "foods" and don't eat only those foods, and your blood work is fine you can give in. If you start wanting to eat dirt, hair, other non-food items, you need to call your doctor. It's called pica and you need to be checked for hormonal/mineral imbalances. I crave chocolate all the time. I have a bowl of cocoa pebbles, I also crave bananas and milk, so all healthy, go ahead and eat. No harm will come if you do so in moderation.

Eat what you want, totally give in to your cravings. I did i, i ate everything in site. The way i saw it, it was my babie that could smell the food and just wanted to try it. I know that isn't exactly true but thats the excuse i made up. And don't worry if you put a little more weight on you can lose it after the baby is born.

I think its best to eat what you want, i did, and i had some very strange cravings, i wanted to eat white chalk, and i did, the doctors told me it was ok in moderation and to drink lots of water afterwards. I,d be sick now if i tried to eat it lol. I also craved milk badly in my second pregnancy with twins, i drank pints and pints of it everyday and sometimes flavoured, you go girl, eat what you need but dont eat pate or liver, as this really isnt good for the baby,
good luck hun, wishing you all the best.

Your weight gain is good.Your pregnancy is going well so as long as you,re not craving salt ,soap or coal then a little of what you want makes you feel good.
Dont go munching 7 bars of choccy a day but dont starve yourself of your cravings.
You wont have time to eat all those goodys when the baby arrives and you wont feel like it when your losing your baby weight so GO AHEAD AND ENJOY!!!

Your baby will love you 4 it!!! Take care of you both xx
