Hi is it better to use 2 hard drives one for data and the other for operating system incase you have a virus it would not affect the data drive. OR if I use one hard drive and have 2 partitions on there which is OS and data, would the virus affect the data on the same hard drive? Thanks let me know.

It depends on the particluar virus you manage to catch.

Using a different hard drive for the OS and the data drive will make a difference in terms of speed but if you were to attract a virus having the data split from the Operating System, wether on two different drives or two different partitions on the same drive will not make a difference.

In both the case the partition or Hard Disk may be affected by the Virus.

But it is prefered to keep two separate disks - one for OS and other for data. This will improve the system performance, because the rotation of one disk will not affect the data reading/writing on other one.

If you are worried about viruses, the best way is to get an external hard drive and back everything up to it including your OS. Just keep it updated and put it in a safe place. Be sure that you have a CD to boot up with and format your hard drive and if you get a bad virus, just format the hard drive and then plug in the external hard drive and copy everything over from it.

a better one will be a single hard drive with two partitions in it,because it will be cheap in price comparing with the two hard drives.
there are many hard drives available in the market with a higher capacity of 80 gb, 120 gb, 160 gb .......
you may have a single drive.
that may reduce the space required inside your cpu cabinet(tower) so the ventilation may be good inside your cpu cabinet.
and the speed of data transfer will be good.
but please install a geniune antivirus.
if you use one drive there may be a option extra for other optical drives, etc to conect it in the ide connector or in the sata connector. those connecters will be useful for your future drives.
say for eg. in a computer there will be 2 ide which connect 4 drives
primary master
primary slave
and
secondary master
secondary slave.

and whereas in sata there will be 4 parallell connectors to the drives.

so if you save a connector you can connect one more device to your system.

the best way to make precautions against viruses and save time - to create partition, install OS and necessary programs into it and then make an image for restoration using "acronis true image" etc. In case your system within system partition/or system drive will be crushed you can recreate full workable copy with this image.
External HDD is good to store the content which you need to use at several PC or never want to share with other users of your PC.
The best formula is: 1 internal HDD with 2 partitions (system and data) + 1 external HDD for data to be in use at different PC. (i use intHDD 400g splitted to 80g and 320g + extHDD 2,5" 200g).

Yea like they said, most viruses will effect anything you access, weather on a partitioned, or second hard drive. but there is one good reason to go with duel drives, your OS uses the drive frequently, eventually wearing it out. storing data on a second drive will ensure that if/ and when your OS drive crashes/ burns out, your data will be safe, and retrievable.

I agree, you can get a virus anyway if you have two hard disks, but, in the other side, two hard disk are better if you want to save your data, (movies, music, pictures, works, ets...) in case you first hard drive crack you have your documents save.

its good having your hard drive in a partition because it cost less. but its much better if you have a large free space in your hard drive and the capacity of your hard drive is 80 gig above..
