Your'e absolutely correct. It's the rate at which the fly decelerates that causes it to be splattered. If the bus is moving very fast the deceleration happens very fast and the fly is a gonner. If the bus was travelling at only 2 miles per hour, the fly would likely survive. It's the same thing that happens to humans when hit by a car !

It will reverse direction if it hits a bigger mass than its self. But the time factor in order for it to slow down before it reverses direction relies on the size of the mass it collided with! This is totally disregarding the impact and shattering of the pair, that could occur! Have a good day! P.S. I don't think a fly would be in the contest with a bus! lol.

The fly, as it splats on the windshield must stop for an infinitesimal, immeasureable time before continuing with the bus, the mass of which cannot be stopped by the fly.
The bus however, due to the mass of the fly, must slowdown by an infinitesimal, immeasureable amount.
Throw a ball VERTICALLY upwards. At the top of its travel, before reversing to come back down, it MUST come to a stop first.

yes the fly stops before reversing
first the velocity decreases at high rate untill the velocity comes to zero.
then the fly along with the bus moves in the opposite direction to its original direction.
all of this happens only takes few fractions of seconds
