The best place to sample all types of Malaysian food is in Jalan Alor, a hawker food area. There's more than 50 stalls and restaurant fighting for your attention there. Nothing fancy but pure good food.
If you would like to taste Malaysian food but in good air-conditioned envinronment, try restaurant chain like Penang Village, or Madam Kwan (KLCC/Midvalley). Kopitiam type eatery's are sprouting about in every corner too. You can sample some local coffee, snacks and some heavy meal such as Nasi Lemak, Curry Laksa and such.
Some food worth mentioning is Nyonya/Peranakan food which is unique here. Basically, it is Straits Chinese food, cooked with Malay influence.
Mamak Stall is another famous food culture. It is everywhere, by the road side, operated by Muslim Indians, they serve all sorts of drinks (no alcohol of course), with their famous Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng and such. Do give it a try.
Try to find time to visit our local night market, called Pasar Malam. Food is applenty there. The famous ones are SS2, in PJ. Huge with lots of variety.

As majority of their patrons are foreigners, their food is tuned down, not spicy or hot for foreigners. They have a 45 minutes cultural dance which start at 2045 hours, is ideal for entertaining foreign guests.

Best Chinese restaurant
Restaurant Name: Sun Hong Muk Koot Tea
Bah Kut Teh is Chinese herbal soup. It was labors' dish for energy recovering, but nowadays it is common food in Malaysia.
Bah Kut Teh can be stewed with steak, pork, chicken or seafood, but "garlic" is the key to raise the taste. Its taste is like Taiwanese mutton herbal soup, but cooking time is less and the soup is not so thick.
Sun Hong Bah Kut Teh was voted as the best Bah Kut Teh restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. Many stars (local or from Taiwan and HK) ate there and pictures are shown on walls as glory.

I would suggest that u go for the high tea at the Hilton Petaling Jaya. Daily 3.30pm-5.30pm and the buffet spread changes daily but definitely consists of indian food, malay food, chinese food and western food. I go there often because i find that the food is most tasty, and cleaner than hawker stalls. Although they are called high tea which normally serves light food, these high tea at PJ Hilton serves varieties of main courses and desserts. I brought many first timers there and they love it. Now it became our usual eating place.

if you're searching for nice indian banana leaf rice, u should head to sri paandi's in petaling jaya. if you want some nice local seafood, head to tanjung harapan, port klang. it's very near from kl and there are lots of nice chinese seafood restaurants there. if you want the traditional 'nasi lemak' or traditional coffe n 'roti bakar with kaya' then go to kopitiam at the curve, mutiara damansara. hoped that was helpful. enjoy!
