Why have all the major countries of this world not brought massive trade sanctions against Japan and the other whale hunting nations untill they understand that this sickening practice will not be tolerated. It is utterly apalling that this behaviour is tolerated by any society, today. What gives whale hunting countries the right to deprive these magnificent creatures of life and future generations of people the chance to marvel at them. Is it because japan and Norway are not oil producing nations., or is there something else which I have missed. Or is it apathy on the part of the political leaders of the major economies of this world?.

I agree with you that it is an horredous activity, however i did an essay on this at university and foundout there is more to it than first meets the eye.

In many countries and cultures whale hunting is still considered part of their tradition and these people dont see killing a whale for meat just like killing a cow. For them it is not just economy (although that is a great deal) but of cultural significance to their heritage which will take time for them to completely erradicate from their history.

There is strict legislation in these countries as to how many whales can be culled (mainly from the IWC), however the odd extreme individual is going to break these rules (as im sure many laws are broken unreasonably in our countries for example fox hunting.) I believe with time all whale culling will be abolished but it must be appreciated that we are from completely different societies that run in completely different ways and by simply forcing our opinions upon them is not going to help in the long run, they must learn for themselves, which im sure they will through genrations to come.

Other cultures in the world continue to cull whales for similar reasons and they are not considered as barbaric. For example the inuits have hunted whales for their entire history of people. Yet they do this for well needed food for their families. Is this still considered barbaric?

I am a full animal rights supporter (vegetarian etc) but there is more to the story than meets the eye. The debate is ongoing for this reason. If it was so simple as we are right and you are wrong there would be no debate and they wouldnt have a leg to stand on.

IT'S JUST A SHAME.
People should try to protect whales, not kill them. It's not scientific research at all. It's only a massacre of innocent, amazing creatures that risk to disappear forever, due to the stupidity of some human beings.
Why is this horrible thing still tolerated? I don't know. Maybe nations that want to protect whales don't want to cause too much rivalry or tensions with nations that kill whales.

Whales are the oceans equivalent of the dinosaurs. If whales were land based there would be an enormous outcry every time one was killed but because they are killed out of sight miles away from human populations nobody seems to do anything to stop it.These loopholes should be closed at once and the countries made to pay for what they are doing.

jap whalers in reality seize a particular species of whale, which isn't in threat of extinction. So, what's the project - sentimentality, it truly is all. perhaps Israel and the Islamic international locations could celebration and produce massive commerce sanctions hostile to the red meat-eating international locations, or India could slap sanctions on us for eating red meat? Whale is a common food for most diverse societies, and if truly some the whales stuck for study finally end up on the dinner table (after the appropriate aspects were bumped off for attempting out), who're we to assert that that is faulty?

Basically governments don't really care as there is no money on whales. I don't agree with whaling but I consider it appallingly and abysmally hypocritical for people in the UK and the US to complain about animal treatment when our nations have shockingly bad treatment of livestock. When we sort out own own farming and hunting methods then we have earned the right to criticise others for theirs.
