He could if he wanted to. But as of right now he doesn't want to. Just like Kim Jong Il does not want to lessen his military strength and feed his people.

People in the West seem to believe that Ahmadinejad actually runs Iran. In truth, the real decisions are made by the "supreme leader" Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his cronies. Ahmadinejad doesn't set the national agenda.

Ahmadinejad has a big mouth and he is a professional politician. He says what his people want to hear, just like our politicians do; and like every government that ever was, there has to be an "enemy" to justify official policies, just like our government has always had.

And if people would just crack a history book once in a while, they'd find out just why Iran has very little love for the West.

The British, French, and Russians have been colonizing Iran since the 1850s. The Americans got into the act about a century later.

In 1901, the British coerced the Shah into giving them a monopoly on Iranian oil. The Iranians received as little as 15 cents on the dollar for their own oil.

1913, The British Royal Navy converts the fleet from coal to oil and the Brits set up military bases in Iran to control the flow of oil.
In 1919, Iran became a British colony in all but name.

1921, Reza Khan seizes control of the government, backed by foreign troops, and is crowned Shah. Twenty years later, the Brits and the Russians overthrow Reza Shah and replace him with his inept son, Muhammed Reza Shah, (the one we all know).

In 1951, the democratically elected Prime Minister, Muhammad Mossadeq, begins to demand that the Iranian people receive more money for their own oil, begins to nationalize the oil fields. By 1953 the corrupt Shah flees to Rome.

Naturally, the Brits and the CIA overthrow Mossadeq and return the Shah to his throne. Yes, the USA and Britain overthrew a legally and democratically elected government to reinstall a monarchy.

In order to keep their boy in power, the CIA forms SAVAK, the Shah's secret police force, who are trained by the israeli secret police, the Mossad. Over the next 25 years SAVAK will arrest, torture and murder thousands of Iranians. Among those tortured will be the future leaders of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, Rafsanjani, Montazeri and Khamenei. (Remember, they hate our freedom...)

In 1979, the Iranians rose up and overthrew their tyrant king, just as we were doing in 1779. The US and the Brits lost their puppet in the Middle East and so they declared Iran a pariah state. In 1980, the US backed our "new" best friend in the region, Saddam Hussein, in an 8 year long war against Iran. We even gave Friend Saddam some poison gas to help him along.

So, as you can see, nobody in the West has shown Iran much "love & unity" in the past 150 years. Why does it puzzle us so when they are hostile to us?

And as for Iran's nuclear activities, Iran is 100% in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to which it is a signatory. It has every legal right to develop nuclear technology, regardless of what Bush and his neo-conmen handlers preach.

In fact, the only countries who didn't sign the NPT were India, Pakistan, and israel. North Korea signed it but then withdrew from it in 2003. All four nations have developed nuclear weapons since.

We reward Pakistan with millions of dollars in military and cash aid. We're giving nuclear technology to India. And israel, the single largest recipient of American foreign aid to the tune of several BILLION of your US tax dollars per year, has over 300 nukes, as well as chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction. One wonders where they got the money for such an impressive arsenal?

And people wonder why the West is so despised in Southwest Asia?? How can so many people live in the "Age of Information" and yet know so little about the real world?

The most arrogant nation in that part of the world is not Iran, but Israel. Iran has never attacked any other country, let alone her neighbours. Forgotten the havoc Israel unleashed recently on defenceless Lebanon, just because two of her untouchable soldiers were said to have been captured by Hezbollah? Forgotten the daily slaughter of defenceless Palestinians by Israeli incursions into Palestine? Which country alone in the Middle East posesses nuclear weapons? Your notes on the political science of the Middle East needs serious revision. Don't just follow Bush & Co blindly!

Seriously...He thinks he is the chosen one to bring about Islams reign as the one true religion and the rest of us are infidels and should convert or be beheaded. I know it sounds like biblical prophesy but it is true. Amadinejad and his followers believe the twelfth Iman is going to appear very soon and this will be the signal for them to start a holy war on the rest of the world with the Imans help. They don't believe they can have peace until Islam rules the earth. These are scary times.
