I am trying to find out for a staff meeting why it is beneficial to teach by themes/topics in the foundation stage and how the 6 areas of learning are covered.

The world of young children is not pigoen-holed into separate subjects, so thematic teaching reflects their developing understanding of the world. Good thematic teaching finds the natural links between the six areas of learning to make use of real life. Beware dodgy links, though. Weak or tenuous links can lead to very poor coverage of the areas of learning and unclear outcomes.

Take materials in science, then making teddy a raincoat in D & T, take teddy for a walk around the school in geography. The list is endless. This probably yr1 but the principles are the same. For children it is just a continuing lesson and I personally think the children become enthused in what they are doing and that they gain greater knowledge and understanding of the topic.

I personally use thematic teaching because I feel it helps children to see how each subject relates to each other, learning becomes more cohesive. I found a good link to www.todaysteacher.com/ThematicTeaching.htm
its an american site but the principles are the same

By using this approach it can really be related to children's interests and experiences. They can become really involved and play a huge part in the planning process. I often ask my children what they would like to learn about and this can be really exciting.
