As a landscape designer for over 20 years, NOT the mowing yard kind, the best and most perminent way is to use a good grade of lawn fertilizer, like Scotts, with weed control at least 3 times you first season getting rid of your Broadleaf weads like Dandelions and crabgrass and clover. Not only will you be killing off the bad weeds, in the spring, using turf builder will strengthen your yard with a heavy dose of Nitigion to green up your lawn and with spring rains, really thinken up the grass nicely and over power the weeds while the wead killer is doing its job also. A lighter coat in the hot of summer when the grass is getting brown from lack of rain and all you have is weads like dandelions, this coations will stick to the weads, broadleaf, with the mornings due and within a few weeks, you will stop again seeing these pesky yellow flowers and clover without any buring to your dry lawn (with you better grade products only, I use scotts, but am not here to endorse this product)

Again, in the fall comes your winterizer with the same weed control, again, broadleaf control. Also, the main fuel for a winter fertilizer is the last number , which makes the roots dig in deeper for better protection during cold. Think about IF putting down thin wead leaf control, it would kill your grass also! So while Grass is a Perional, Broadleaf is a Bi-Annual, a whole different type of plant. It reseeds and sprounts bi-annually. While grass goes brown, it is not dead, just dorment, a perinnal plant..

Yes, you may use spot treatments as a spray over your yard but many spots will be missed and over the long run, the feeding with weed killer works better in the long haul, yes costly, but after a year or two, one good spring feeding should keep your weeds under good control for years.....and a healthy green. And a great lawn will make your property value go up, up, up!

Hope this helps someone,

There are two ways:

1. In the autumn apply a weed and feed mix (you will find many in your garden centre). This contains a selective weedkiller that will kill dandelions and other broad leaved weeds.

2. In spring or summer, buy liquid Roundup and paint on the liquid with a small paintbrush to the dandelion leaves.

Either are very effective
