Many reasons:

1. MNC's are yet to adapt to Open source. The marketing power of Sun & Microsoft is essentially driving them more towards those solutions.

2. MNC's have lot of legacy applications - which need to be integrated with modern languages. Java scores much better here.

3. PHP has gained massive acceptance only in the past few years.Typically most MNC's would start using a technology only a few years after the developer community uses it aggressively.

I'm sure there are more reasons...but this is all i could think of now!

.net and java are some reasons.
php has an advantage being opensource but java development can also be done on linux machines. it has more to offer than wat php offers.

But it is still in demand.not that its gone completely...no.. its still there.. and people are using it for the ease of its using.
there are n number of portals built on php and are still running...
and if the wanna maintain these portals they better hire php freaks....
