The Republic of India, commonly known as India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous liberal democracy in the world. India has a coastline of over seven thousand kilometres, bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east. India borders Pakistan to the west, the People's Republic of China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia.Home to the Indus Valley Civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped India's variegated culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early 18th century and colonised by Great Britain from the mid-19th century, India became a modern nation-state in 1947 after a struggle for independence marked by widespread use of nonviolent resistance as a means of social protest. With the world's fourth largest economy in purchasing power and the second fastest growing large economy, India has made rapid progress in the last decade, especially in information technology. Although India's standard of living is projected to rise sharply in the next half century, it currently battles high levels of poverty, illiteracy, persistent malnutrition, and environmental degradation. A pluralistic, multi lingual, multi-ethnic country, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.

hi sandeep, when u asked thie question did u imagine that u will get such myraid responses? well friend, that is what India is all about. u can go on and on and on about this country. It may be a third world country. but it has too many riches to offer to the world in the form of culture, tradition and cuisine and many more. it is a place full of the rich and the poor, the high and the low. it is the land where the contradictions and paradoxes are beautifully blended. . i will tell u a joke which i happened to read
in a classroom, a teacher asked the student whether he knew anything about the nationality of Adam and Eve. the boy replied that they were indians. when asked to elaborate on his answer the boy replied," well. they had no clothes to wear, no roof above them and only an apple to share between them. yet they called it paradise". i think this speaks volumes abt india. we may be poor, but we have fewer worries. that is the best attitude to develop towards life. not pining for what we do not have, but being satisfied with what we have. it is like any other country in the world. it has both good and bad in it.

What do i think of India. 1st . It is the only country which has the love symbol (Taj mahal) and it is one of the wonders of the world. The world regards indian ladies as very beautiful women. It is a country full of many cultures. We have many forms of dances from bharathanatiya to kathakali. We also have great leaders in Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru , Indira Gandhi and Mr Abdul Kalam. If we consider the seperated Nepal, Pakistan, Srilanka as India, then the Everest Mountain should be in India. The Basmati grain of rice is also found here. The people are very educated and smart. They are also helpful.
India has has many temples and a rich history. We also have the mahabarata. We have so many things that we should consider ourselves proud to be an indian today.

Hi sandeep, good question. You know very well that it cant be answered to the complete satisfaction of anyone. I shall try. Its a great country with rich traditions, spiruality, multi religious, multi ethnic and with great national fervor. Its a Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic in much better ways than is seen from outside. It has its flip side of the story as well, what with religious extremism(both Hindu and Muslim), poverty, corruption, bad politicians, pollutions, large Economic divides etc.. Its the country to watch in the second quarter of the 21st century. It has the potential to grow in to a super power provided we all Indians want to. Provided our politicians allow us to do the same. We must eradicate poverty, slums, gender inequality, terrorism and Naxalism. Great economic strides in IT, space devp, nanotech and infrastructure coupled with eradication of the ills will take us where we want to reach.
