The person next door runs his washing machine at night, and loud music the rest of the time. I can not sleep, and don't want to wear ear plugs in case there is a fire. He has denied putting the washing machine on at night. I am at my wits end. How can I sleep or read a book through this?

it could be his central heating making a noise, with the music perhaps try and compromise and ask him that he turn it down by 10pm or if it's really bad contact the environmental health you will probably be asked to keep a diary and provide proof of the disturbance.. is it rented accommodation or privately owned? If it's rented contact the landlord and complain and ask them nicely to have a word.. if not decide which side you predominantly sleep on and wear a plug in the opposite ear.. I find this is enough usually to get me to sleep and the other ears clear to hear for the fight or flight response

It depends on how serious you are about resolving the problem. The problem could be resolved by involving the neighbourhood watch or call the police when the washing machine/music is on. That person would get a fine that they would have to pay in jail. Noise pollution at certain times of the day in a neighbourhood is a punishable crime.

Write him on a video. With the time and date.
Speak on the video, and say what the other person is listening.
Do that for a some days.
On the same tape.
And then when u think that you have material.
Phone the police.
Tell them what's going on, and tell them to came.
Before that you go to them a few times don't forget when u do that give the video 2 same one else to write the conversation u have with them. They mustn't see you that you record them.
Then when the police comes, you will have material from different days, and you going 2 them asking them to slow down a little.
You will have them speaking 2 you. The way the spoke and everything.
The police will see that and then they will choose what to do.
Good luck.

Is it possible for you to record these noises when they are happening. If so you could always present the evidence to your neighbour if you are 100% sure it is him who is making the noise.

If after confronting him with the evidence and if the still noise persists, then contact you local environmental department and let them deal with it.

Good luck, they don't insulate houses like they used these days. It would drive me daft if I had to listen to that night and day.

Of course you could always play him at his own game and turn up the volume though generally two wrongs don't make a right.

The only way to deal with bullies is to fight them on similar terms. Get a super-duper sound system with at least 200 watts output. Place next to bullies walls. Put heavy-metal music on. Leave for 48 hours and go to friends . Return to reformed bully. Good luck. The other ways to remedy this problem, council environmental officer and tape recordings just do not work in practice, believe me.

Reporting him to the council for noise pollution or disturbing the peace could result in him getting an ASBO. Make records of times when these events take place and try and get something on tape or film if you can.

if you cant beat the game, join in and have fun! now, now... im not trying to say you should play music and do your laundry at night too. but why don't you try to enjoy the music, maybe dance with it. try to be one with it. sooner or later, you wouldnt even feel disturbed by it and get to do stuff not bothered by this. sounds only irritate us when we see it as noise. try to appreciate it and maybe you'll soon be immune. if this doesn't work, call the police or report your naeighbor to your community leader or something. the guy is abusing his privileges. that aint right.

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem. here is what I did:

- I worte a polite notice to all my neighboors asking if he person who is the source of the noise could find an alternative time for doing what they do
- I complaint to the property management, there are house rules about noise
- it still id not help, so I called the noise team (at your local borough / council)
- call he anti-social-behavior-team

If it all won't help, move to a better neighbourhood.

Good luck!

Cut off his power. Open up the DB and pull the fuse/trip the switch, it'll be the last place he looks. He'll probably have to pay a sparkie £300 to test his system.
