I believe that two, if not the top two American Rock bands are Aerosmith and The Eagles. But I would like to know what you think.
Have the groups on your list stood the test of time? Have they influenced people outside Rock n Roll?

Enjoy!

Way to go folks...And consider those bands that have spawned great individual acts (Eagles for instance).
Also, just so you know, Aerosmith has had hits in Rock, Pop and Blues.

Springsteen & The E Street Band: A bit of time out between late 80s to 90s, but with albums like Born To Run & Darkness On The Edge Of Town in 70s, and The River and Born In The USA in 80s....and still doing 2.5-3 hour shows now when tour it's hard to top the Boss.

The Eagles: A few changes in the line-up over the years - and "a 14 year vacation" - but always sheer class in whatever style they play.

Meat Loaf and The Neverland Express: Even though more like a McDonalds franchise than a band (same clown up the front all the time with staff changing behind the counter)...The Big Fella and whoever is with him at the time will rock.

Alice Cooper: Another franchise, but boy can Vince get your attention.

Guns N' Roses: "I-I-I-I got something in my eye...where did they go now?" Now I've got that out of my system Slash is up there with the best of them.

Eagles to be sure. Aerosmith, despite their sales - the only thing I know is "Walk this way" - so I'd say sorry, not enough influence. Perhaps great as musicians but that's not enough. I can show you many great musicians starving in the streets.

The other four bands IMO:
The Beach Boys (if you call that pop I'll give a fifth choice at the end)
Credence Clearwater
Steve Miller
Lynyrd Skynyrd/Allman Brothers tie
The Doobie Brothers

Have to have a couple of the Founding "Fathers":
Buddy Holly & the Crickets
Roy Orbison & anyone that ever played with him.

A Detroiter must include:
Bob Seeger & the Silver Bullet Band
The Eagles, definitely
Marshall Tucker
ZZ Top
Janis Joplin & Big Brother
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Jim Morrison & the Doors
Yes
