Get macafee completely out of and off your computer. Remove it entirely. Then use Spybot S&D or Spyware terminator, both free to download, and never worry again. I had nothing but trouble with both macafee and norton, and the IT director at work told me this, and that this is what he uses on all the company computers. At the same time, stop using Internet Explorer but do not delete it, download Mozilla Firefox free and set it as your default browser. I have been virus free, suffered no freezes or crashes, and seen only a very few pop ups in the three years since I took this advice. Be ready though for one thing that sometimes makes me wonder. About once a month I set Spyware Terminator to do the maximum scan it will do, and this takes it almost 4 hours to do on my 160 gig drive. The first time I ran it three years ago was the only time it found anything, and then it found almost 200 infected files that macafee had missed. It has never found anything since during this maximum scan, but still I set it in motion once a month to be safe. It does do a fast scan in a couple of minutes for day to day upkeep.
I wonder every time just why it takes so long, but the peace of mind is worth it.

Is it trying to do a scan? Check the task bar. If it is, stop it and then change the config to either scan at another time you aren't using the computer or only when you manually tell it to scan.

Otherwise, if you downloaded McAfee from the web you can deinstall everything and then go back to your account on-line and reinstall. Might help if something didn't update properly.

Remove mcafee.

Norton does the same thing. Anti-virus software is well known for slowing down a pc.
