Yes it certaiinly will make it double, if you come to think about it gas fireplace is not controlled thermostatically so it burns more gas than the normal furnace would, may I suggest purchasing a pellet stove next winter this will save you some money, since it does not use gas and works like a fireplace does and believe me they are quite effiicient also purchasing a good convection heater will lower your heating bills, convection heaters are the most efficient space heater you can buy, make sure that your house does not have any air leaks this tends to run up heating bills also having dual glazed windows helps alot. Good Luck !

NO, it should NOT make your gas bill double, unless you use the fireplace constantly. Your gas fireplace only produces about 25,000-40,000 BTU's, unless you are talking about a gas logset in a formerly woodburning fireplace, in which case it can go up to about 80,000 BTU's maximum. Even then, you should not see such a spike in your gas bill. My suspicion is that you have a gas leak somewhere; I would call the gas company and have them come out and check. If you tell them what is going on, I would bet they will same the same thing. If you don't smell gas anywhere in the house, it may be outside, but with such a spike in your bill, it is probably a leak.
