By 'square' in mathematics, we normally mean a number which has a simple and exact square root. So 196 would be one because it is 14*14. 556516 is 746*746, and so is a square. You don't need to stop with whole numbers. 5565.16 is also a square, because it is 74.6*74.6 exactly. 2 is not a square, because although 1.4142*1.4142 is nearly 2, it isn't exactly 2.

The other answers you have received such as 'floor tile' and 'face of a die' are examples of geometrical squares. The different interpretation is perfectly valid, and shows how important it is to know the context when answering a question.
