my question is...what are the odds of conceiving another child while i am still breastfeeding?

i've been breastfeeding my daughter for almost 7 months now.
i know breastfeeding can help keep your period away for many months, but for me it came all too soon. LOL.

anyway, i just have this odd feeling that i may be pregnant again. I seem to be hungrier than usual. i've gained about 5 pounds this week. I've had cramps for the past two weeks...and it's not that special time, ya know? i've taken 2 pregnancy tests, both said NEGATIVE.

I read a study (from website www.slate.com) that says that breast-feeding is 85% effective as a form of "birth-control" for the first 6 months. (condoms are 98% effective.)

so, yeah, it can happen, but it's not really likely.

you could be going some hormonal changes which are causing the cramps and food cravings. your body has to re-regulate its cycles again after childbirth, and that can cause all sorts of weird changes, and in mood as well.

Its not necessary that breastfeeding will stop conception again. its not a form of contraception. it does delay fertility for some women but its not reliable. I have also been breastfeeding my 7 month old daughter and I got my period in the 5th month so i assume I'm fertile unless there is any other problem.

For some ladies it works as a contraception. It happens because of a hormone released during breastfeeding but I've had friends who have babies exactly 9 months apart so it can happen. If you are sure something is there go get yourself checked with a blood test. You can rest assured after a blood test.

You can get pregnant while breastfeeding. Just as you could before. Usually as long as you cycle, you ovulate, you can get pregnant.

If your baby is eating more, you may be hungrier. If you are stressed. you may be eating more. Try making healthy food choices for you and your breastfeeding child.

I would wait until the "special time", if still no cycle, see your doctor, Your nutritional needs will change if you are both pregnant and breastfeeding.

I did not test positive on pee pregnancy tests until I was about 4 months pregnant after my 1st pregnancy.

People seem to forget that they are fertile for about a month before they get their period back so yes there is a good chance that you are pregnant again....breastfeeding is not a form of contraception.... it is very common for women to fall pregnant while breastfeeding! It is possible that you are having negative results because of your hormones.....Go see your doc, they will be able to do a more accurate test!

The odds are very good. Breastfeeding is not birth control!

For many women...lactation supresses ovulation...as you said you already got your periods back...well then, your chances of getting pregnant are just as good any one elses. Both tests said negative, so wait until you are actually late before testing again....but breatsfeeding is not birth control for you!

Erm...breat feeding has nothing to do with concieving..
You could get pregnant the first day you have sex after healing from giving birth...
