As an infant I was one of the first children to have the "balloon" angioplasty done to stretch a constriction in my aorta. Year 1971.
Completed at The University of Alabama hospital in Birmingham by John Kirklin. 7 years later the constriction was completely repaired with surgery (1978) that wouldn't have been possible if not for the new procedure.

Dr. Kirlklin's work is now textbook studies for today's cardiologists and they have since named a wing of the hospital after him. His son is now the director of the cardiovascular dept at UAB.

I just count myself LUCKY to be alive.
