The following items makes a person approachable:

1) Body language. If a person is tense, you can tell by the way they hold their arms or hands. If their body language is relaxing, this is evident by the way their shoulders are not drooping, their arms are not crossed and their hands and palms are open and inviting.

2) Tone of their voice. If it is stern constantly, this usually means that they really are not a people person and does not work well with others. If their voice is calm and confident, this makes them very approachable.

3) The way a person looks at you. If they dart their eyes around without looking at you directly, this means that they have something to hide or are not comfortable with people or strangers in general. If they look at you eye to eye, this means they are open to you and your ideas.

The key though is the body. If it does not say "Hello, I am open to you and what you are about, this should be easy to pick out by the signs I have stated. Hope this helps you.
